Congress Authorizing Nationwide RON

This week the House Energy and Commerce Committee introduced the RON Act H.R. 3962. If passed, the law would permit immediate nationwide use of RON: Remote Online Notarization.

RON is a fully digital Notary process wherein the signer ‘appears’ in an on-line, video-enabled, virtual call to sign and otherwise complete the notarization of a document. The process is per-authenticated, complete with multiple layers of process security and is securely recorded for future audits. The Act also creates national minimum standards for use so that the notary can be recognized between states.

The Act was approved by a 56-0 committee vote, and is strongly supported by The American Land Title Association (ALTA). Currently 42 states have passed bills allowing permanent use of RON. This Act, if passed, would not override any of the states own RON legislation, which in some cases include additional requirements to their processes.
